Refrigerators in Dhaka work harder than the same models in cooler, drier cities. High humidity means more moisture inside the cabinet, road dust settles on the condenser coils, and load-shedding causes repeated thaw-and-freeze cycles. A sensible cleaning routine keeps food safer and the compressor healthier.
Every week: a five-minute wipe
Remove anything past its date, wipe spills on shelves and the door bins with warm water and a little baking soda, and check the back wall for pooled water. Spills that dry into the drain channel are the start of most bad smells.
Every month: gaskets and drain
Clean the rubber door gasket with a soft cloth — mould loves the folds. Pour a little warm water into the defrost drain hole to make sure it flows freely to the tray underneath.
Every 4 to 6 months: a professional deep clean
This is where the real efficiency gains are. A deep clean includes removing and washing every shelf and drawer, sanitising the cabinet with food-safe solution, flushing the drain line, vacuuming and brushing the condenser coils, cleaning the compressor area and checking the gasket seal and temperatures. In homes near main roads, or in restaurants, we recommend every three to four months.
After a long power cut
If the fridge has been off for more than a few hours, check for melted water behind the drawers and discard anything that has warmed up. Wipe and dry the cabinet before restarting, and wait a few minutes before switching on if the voltage is unstable.
