7 Signs Your Refrigerator Needs a Technician (Before the Food Spoils)

Most refrigerators give plenty of warning before they fail completely. The trouble is that the early signs are easy to ignore — a little extra noise, a bit of frost, a door that doesn’t quite seal. These are the seven symptoms our technicians run into most often on home visits across Uttara and north Dhaka, and what they usually point to.

1. The fridge section feels warm but the freezer is fine

In frost-free models this is very often a blocked air channel or a failed evaporator fan. Cold air is being made in the freezer but not pushed down into the fresh-food section. It is usually a same-day repair, but if ignored the ice build-up gets worse and the compressor runs non-stop.

2. The compressor runs all day and never switches off

A healthy compressor cycles on and off. If yours hums constantly, the cause may be dirty condenser coils, a weak door gasket, low refrigerant or a faulty thermostat. Your electricity bill will tell the same story.

3. Water pooling under the crisper drawers

A clogged defrost drain is the usual culprit. Food particles and algae block the small tube at the back wall, so defrost water collects inside instead of draining to the tray. A proper cleaning and drain flush solves it.

4. Thick frost on the freezer walls

Frost-free freezers should not frost up. When they do, the defrost heater, bimetal sensor or defrost timer has usually failed. In direct-cool models, heavy frost points to a door seal that is letting humid Dhaka air in.

5. Clicking, buzzing or rattling noises

A repeated click every few minutes often means the compressor relay or overload protector is struggling to start the motor. Rattling can be a loose fan blade or a drain pan. Don’t wait on a clicking compressor — repeated failed starts shorten its life.

6. A burning smell or tripping breaker

Switch the fridge off at the wall and call a technician. Burning smells usually come from a damaged wire, a failing starter or a scorched PCB after a voltage surge. This is not a DIY job.

7. The door no longer closes with a firm seal

Try the paper test: close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. If it slides out easily, the gasket is leaking cold air. Replacing a gasket is inexpensive and can noticeably cut running costs.
